Last Friday (31/4/24) Deb and Tash from the ActiveStrongerBetter Team attended the Healthy Ageing Summit in Brisbane! They had a great time, met new people, and learnt a lot. These events are a fantastic way to keep up with current knowledge, evidence and best practice. The ASB team is passionate about learning new things and providing updates for participants and leaders.
The team loved seeing one of our ActiveStrongerBetter Leaders, Lorraine, present on effective gait and falls prevention. It was incredibly well received by all who attended the session!
A few takeaway points:
• Healthy ageing = Taking on life’s stressors and recovering, creating resilient tissues and mind. We support this through exercising – moving fluid through the hard and soft tissues of the body to support flow through the joints, blood, lymphatic system, and flow of hormones through the body.
• Physical activity is the ‘elixir of life’.
• A lot rests on your feet (literally) and foot stimulation is a nice start – walking on different surfaces, spending time with no shoes no, consider fascia release
• When considering an exercise program consider life stressors as stress manifests in the body 12 months later. Check that clients are hydrated and ask about emotional well being and stress.
• Importance of breath in exercise to support the body in moving, with sequence being critical =
1. Breath/connect to body first
2. Move
3. Load
• Health span vs Life span – it’s not about the age in years, but the quality of life and lengthening the ‘health span’ where a person is able to manage day to day tasks independently (see pictures). Optimal ageing.
• There was a really interesting session on how exercise can support people with cancer. A lot of detail to share, but essentially movement is key in supporting cancer treatment and recovery.
