Earlier this month on the 4th of July it was World Sarcopenia Day. We may have missed the world day but we feel it is an important topic to bring awareness to whenever we get the chance.
What is Sarcopenia? Sarcopenia is the degenerative loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength and quality associated with ageing. It can affect anyone over the age of 40 and the loss of muscle mass and strength can result in increased risk of physical disability and reduced quality of life as we age.
The key way to combat and prevent sarcopenia is to do regular exercise that involves resistance training. It is never too late to start as resistance training can be beneficial in combating and preventing sarcopenia no matter what age you start participating, it has been shown to re-grow degenerating muscle in people up to 101 years old. For more information on the benefits of resistance training to addressing sarcopenia, visit https://exerciseright.com.au/sarcopenia/. Almost all of the classes listed with the ActiveStrongerBetter program involve resistance training.
Resistance training can improve strength, mobility, independence and functional movement in everyday life. This can reduce and/or reverse impacts of physical disabilities or limitations and bring more quality of life to our later years.
